How to Turn Off Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Apple Intelligence, launched in late 2024 with iOS 18.1, has received mixed feedback. While features like voice note transcription, custom emoji creation, and proofreading are popular, others, such as inaccurate notification summaries, have drawn criticism. With iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence is now enabled by default for new users and those upgrading, but you can disable it or customize its features.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to manage or disable Apple Intelligence on your devices.


What Is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is a suite of AI-driven features introduced in iOS 18.3 and macOS 15. Below are some key features:

  • Writing Tools (e.g., proofreading)
  • ChatGPT Extension via Siri
  • Genmoji (custom emoji creation)
  • Image Playground (image editing)
  • Image Wand (image generation)
  • Priority Notifications
  • Notification Summaries (in Mail and Messages)
  • Reduce Interruptions Focus Mode

Note: These features are only supported on select devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 lineup.


How to Disable Apple Intelligence

To completely turn off Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac:

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Scroll down and tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Toggle Apple Intelligence off.

How to Disable Specific Apple Intelligence Features

You don’t have to disable the entire suite. Here’s how to turn off specific features:

Disable Apple Intelligence for Specific Apps

  1. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence.
  2. Scroll down to Apps.
  3. Select the app you want to modify.
  4. Toggle off Learn from this App.

Turn Off Email Summarization in the Mail App

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps.
  2. Tap Mail.
  3. Scroll to Message List.
  4. Toggle off Summarize Message Preview.

Disable the ChatGPT Extension via Siri

  1. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence.
  2. Scroll to ChatGPT.
  3. Toggle Use ChatGPT off.

Additional Quick Settings

To disable AI-summarized notifications without navigating through Settings:

  1. When an AI-summarized notification appears (displayed in italics), press and hold the notification.
  2. Tap Options and choose to turn it off.

How to Re-Enable Apple Intelligence

If you decide to turn Apple Intelligence back on:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Toggle Apple Intelligence & Siri on.

Once enabled, your device will take a few moments to load all features, and you can track the progress on your screen.
