Barclays IT Glitch Leaves Customers Locked Out of Accounts

A major IT outage at Barclays has left customers unable to access their funds, causing significant disruptions, particularly for those relying on payday deposits.

Honeymoon Nightmare for Newlyweds

David Marsh and his wife, from Cumbria, found themselves stranded without access to their money while celebrating their honeymoon in Australia.

“I’m unable to receive money for my honeymoon into my current account or use my current account to clear my credit card before departing,” said Marsh.

Frustrated by the situation, he vowed to switch banks upon his return to the UK. “I’ve been a Barclays customer since 1986. The day I return, I’m moving my account elsewhere.”

Customers Facing Financial Hardship

Many customers have taken to social media to express their distress. A mother reported being unable to buy milk for her four-month-old baby, stating, “My baby is screaming for a feed, and I still haven’t been paid. I’ve been in tears for hours.”

Karen Bannister, 52, from Wakefield, described her ordeal: “I had transferred all my money into Barclays to cover gas, electricity, rent, petrol, and food. The money never arrived. My card was declined at the supermarket, which was completely embarrassing. By 9 PM, I was left without heating because my gas had run out.”

Bannister, a Barclays customer for 40 years, is now planning to leave the bank. “Barclays needs to compensate those affected. People were left without salaries and missed important payments, including taxes.”

Public Outcry on Social Media

Disgruntled customers have voiced their frustration:

  • “Had a food shop due for delivery this morning, now canceled, leaving my four kids without food. It’s a joke.”
  • “How can I eat and keep warm if I can’t get to my funds?”
  • “I just had to put all my shopping back in Tesco—never been so embarrassed in my life.”

Barclays Responds

Barclays has issued an apology, acknowledging the technical problems affecting account balances and payments.

“We’re incredibly sorry for the ongoing technical issues impacting our customers. Some may see an outdated balance, and payments made or received may not show. We will ensure that no customer is left out of pocket,” Barclays said in a statement.

The bank has advised customers not to attempt repeated transactions and reassured them that they are working hard to resolve the issue.

Widespread Impact

The Down Detector outage tracker recorded over 1,600 reports of Barclays banking service failures since Friday, highlighting the scale of the problem.

As Barclays works to restore normal service, many customers are considering switching to alternative banking providers, demanding compensation, and expressing their frustration over the lack of access to essential funds.
