Josh Allen, Bills Face Another Devastating Playoff Loss to Chiefs: ‘We Didn’t Get It Done’

The rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs delivered yet another thrilling chapter on Sunday, adding to their storied recent history. However, for the Bills, it was another heartbreaking chapter of disappointment.

The Chiefs once again triumphed over the Bills, securing a 32-29 victory in the AFC Championship Game and booking their ticket to a third consecutive Super Bowl. With this loss, the Bills’ playoff struggles against their arch-rivals continue, dropping to 0-4 in recent postseason matchups.

“To be the champs, you’ve got to beat the champs,” Bills quarterback Josh Allen said following the defeat. “And we didn’t do that tonight.”

Despite Allen’s solid performance, it wasn’t enough. His duels with Patrick Mahomes have become legendary, but once again, Mahomes and the Chiefs found a way to come out on top, surpassing 30 points for the first time this season.

Buffalo’s hopes were dashed by two crucial fourth-down failures, moments that will haunt their fans all offseason. The first came on a fourth-and-1 attempt from Kansas City’s 41-yard line early in the fourth quarter, with Buffalo clinging to a narrow 22-21 lead.

Initially ruled short, Allen’s sneak attempt was upheld upon review, despite appearing incredibly close to the marker. Bills head coach Sean McDermott expressed his frustration after the game.

“The look we had in the stadium… I thought he had it,” McDermott said. “From my angle, it looked like he got to the line. That’s all I can say.”

The second failed fourth-down conversion occurred with under two minutes left in the game. Facing a critical fourth-and-5, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo dialed up a blitz, forcing Allen to throw off his back foot. His desperate pass hit tight end Dalton Kincaid in the hands, but he couldn’t secure it. That was Buffalo’s last chance, as the Chiefs ran out the clock.

Reflecting on the decisive moment, Allen credited the Chiefs’ defensive strategy.

“They gave a good look,” Allen said. “Didn’t see anything in my first cadence. They slid left, and the corner came… Yeah.”

The failed fourth-down attempts proved costly, leading to a Chiefs touchdown and a subsequent game-sealing possession. The Bills performed well in some areas, converting 3 of 3 red zone opportunities and 4 of 6 fourth-down tries. However, their two failures came at the most pivotal moments.

McDermott acknowledged the significance of those missed opportunities.

“Of course it does. Darn right it does,” he said. “That was a possession where we were up by one. We had a chance to extend the lead. It’s a big call.”

Buffalo also struggled with multiple short-yardage situations, but McDermott stood by his decision to rely on Allen in those crucial plays.

“It’s been our best play all year,” he stated. “We’ve been successful with it. Maybe we could have disguised it better, but at the end of the day, we trust Josh and our offensive line.”

Despite their efforts, the Bills once again fell short, marking four consecutive playoff exits at the hands of the Chiefs—ending their 2020, 2021, 2023, and now 2024 seasons. The recurring heartbreak leaves fans and analysts asking the same questions.

Bills pass rusher Von Miller shared his perspective with NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe.

“Man, after a loss like that, you think, ‘What if we did this, what if we did that?’ But we did everything we could to win this game. It just wasn’t our time. Losses hurt. They’re supposed to. But adversity reveals character, and we have high-character guys here. We’ll be back.”

Looking ahead, McDermott expressed pride in his team’s fight throughout the season and remained hopeful for the future.

“We’ve got to keep working to get over that hump,” McDermott said. “We’ve won tough games against great opponents. I’m proud of this team.”

However, the challenge remains the same—overcoming the Chiefs and finally reaching their Super Bowl dreams.

“This is obviously a challenge for us,” McDermott concluded. “We’ll figure it out.”
