Star Wars: KOTOR 1 & 2 Are Free on Mobile—If You Ignore Google’s Malware Warning

Two of the greatest Star Wars RPGs ever made, Knights of the Old Republic KOTR 1 and 2, are currently available for free on mobile—but there’s a catch. To get them, you’ll need an Android device and the willingness to bypass Google’s warning about potentially “harmful” files.

Epic Games Store Brings Free KOTOR to Mobile

The giveaway is part of the Epic Games Store’s push to establish itself as a cross-platform gaming hub. PC players have enjoyed free games from Epic for years, and now mobile users are starting to benefit from the company’s expansion efforts.

This initiative began in August 2024, following Epic’s lengthy legal battle to launch a competing app store on mobile devices. The move has already brought Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe back to certain platforms, as Epic aims to create a mobile gaming marketplace outside Apple and Google’s control.

Google’s Malware Warning—A Hurdle for Gamers

While Android users can technically install the Epic Games Store, Google still tries to deter them by flagging the installation as risky. Users attempting to download KOTOR 1 and 2 are met with a security warning about “harmful” files, which could scare off casual gamers unfamiliar with sideloading apps.

Epic, however, has provided a step-by-step guide to bypass these warnings and install the store safely. While the process is straightforward, it highlights the ongoing battle between Epic and Google over app distribution rights.

A Step Forward for Mobile Gaming?

Despite these hurdles, the availability of Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 for free is a big win for mobile gamers. It marks another step in Epic’s fight for a more open mobile gaming ecosystem, even if users have to jump through a few hoops to access it.

Would you be willing to sideload the Epic Games Store for these Star Wars classics, or does Google’s warning give you pause?
